Osteoporosis

Most people know that osteoporosis is a skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration in bone microarchitecture leading to bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures.  What most people don't know is that 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 65 will develop osteoporosis.  Even more shocking is that of those people over 50 years old who break a hip, due to osteoporosis, less than 15% of them will be alive one year later!  This is a very serious problem which is getting worse every year!  Obviously, the sooner you address it, the better the outcome for the rest of your life!

Common risk factors for osteoporosis are changing as well.  Belief used to be the general profile for a person at risk of osteoporosis was a petite, white, fair complexioned, light-eyed woman.  Now the risk factors are much broader.  They include:

  • History of abnormal menses
  • History of anorexia, diabetes, Cushing's, hyperthyroid, hyperparathyroid
  • Digestive problems such as gallbladder disease, malabsorption, hypochlorhydria
  • Prolonged bedrest, wheelchair bound
  • Women who have never had a full term pregnancy
  • Inadequate calcium or Vitamin D
  • Dietary factors: high protein diet, high caffeine intake, high sodium, high phosphate intake, low calcium
  • Sedentary lifestyles

Along with these risk factors are metabolic factors that promote osteoporosis.  These include:

  • Unbalanced levels of estradiol, progesterone, testosterone
  • Blood Sugar imbalances
  • Essential Fatty Acid imbalances
  • Subclinical infection / Inflammation (pathogens, food sensitivities)

All of which occur in both men and women regardless of size or coloring.
